Kingston, If You Want a Boat With a Band on It

Kingston is the western gate of the archipelago and the only port here with a proper city behind it. Boats leave Crawford Wharf, a two-minute walk from City Hall, and the three-hour Heart of the Islands route runs west to east through the Admiralty group past Napoleon's Hat, Wanderer's Channel and the Mandalay Mansion.

Two things separate Kingston from the other four. The vessels are the triple-deck paddlewheeler Island Queen and the glass-topped Island Star, both of which carry a live entertainer and a full galley, so lunch and dinner sailings run on the same route as the sightseeing one. And every Kingston cruise stays in Canadian water, which the operator states plainly in its own FAQ. Nobody on those boats needs a passport, ever.

The trade is distance. Kingston sits at the thin end of the islands, so the first 40 minutes are open water and the famous castles are out of range entirely. Come here for the boat and the city; go east for the landmarks.

Gananoque, the Default Choice for a Reason

Gananoque calls itself the gateway to the 1000 Islands and 5,000 people live there, most of them within sight of the water. The City Cruises port sells one ticket in three lengths, which is why its listing has collected 5,126 reviews against 1,408 for its own sister port at Ivy Lea.

The one-hour sailing stays among the Admiralty and Navy islands. It is pretty and it is not the reason people drive here: it reaches neither Boldt Castle nor Millionaire's Row, and the operator says so in the listing. The three-hour does both, adds Zavikon Island and the Seaway channel, and is the sailing most first-time visitors actually want. The five-hour crosses the border, docks at Heart Island and folds castle admission into the fare.

Gananoque is 4 km off Highway 401 and 32 km from Kingston, which makes it the easiest port to slot into a Toronto to Montreal drive. Parking is in the operator's paid lot.

Ivy Lea and Rockport, Where the River Narrows

These two villages sit in the tightest part of the channel, 45 and 55 km from Kingston, and both have free parking at the dock. That geography is the whole argument for them: the islands close in, the boats pass within metres of cottage porches, and a one-hour sailing from Ivy Lea covers landmarks that take three hours to reach from Gananoque.

Ivy Lea runs one and two-hour cruises, and the two-hour is the cheapest way anywhere on the Canadian side to see both castles in a single sailing at $35. It never docks, so no passport comes into it.

Rockport is the specialist. Rockport Boat Line has worked this water for over 70 years and runs six lengths from one hour to six, including the only stopover at Singer Castle offered by any Canadian operator. Its four and five-hour Boldt Castle sailings use smaller boats than the Gananoque equivalent, which means shorter queues at the castle gate, and the five-hour gives 3.5 hours ashore plus the Yacht House shuttle and a boxed lunch for CAD $99.

Brockville, for the Ships and the Short Version

Brockville is 85 km from Kingston at the eastern end of the islands, and its 90-minute catamaran is the cheapest ticket on this page at $29. The boat takes 120 passengers, draws little enough to enter channels the bigger tour vessels avoid, and runs alongside the St. Lawrence Seaway shipping lane where ocean freighters pass on their way to the Great Lakes.

The departures are frequent and short, which suits two groups: families with small children who will not last three hours, and drivers breaking up the 401 who want an hour and a half on the water and then dinner. The Brockville waterfront also holds the Aquatarium and the restored 1860s railway tunnel, both within a five-minute walk of the ticket office at Blockhouse Island.

Parking on the island is limited, so arrive early on a July weekend or leave the car in the downtown lots a block back.

What Each Duration Actually Buys

An hour gets you islands. Three hours gets you the landmarks. Five or six hours gets you inside a castle. That is the whole ladder, and where you start on it depends on your port, because an hour out of Ivy Lea covers ground that takes three from Kingston.

The pattern holds across operators. Rockport's one-hour reaches Boldt Castle, Zavikon and Millionaire's Row because the boat starts in the narrows. Gananoque's one-hour reaches none of them. Same length, same price bracket, completely different cruise.

Is a 1000 Islands Cruise Worth It

For a first visit, yes, with one condition: the islands are only visible from the water. The 1000 Islands Parkway gives you glimpses through trees and the observation tower gives you a map view from 130 m up, but the cottages, the boathouses, the channels a metre wider than the boat and the reason anyone built a castle out here only make sense at deck level.

The reviews back that up in a specific way. Across the nine listings here the ratings sit between 4.3 and 4.9, and the complaints in the low scores are consistently about queues, muffled commentary and dock parking rather than the cruise itself. Laurie, who sailed from Ivy Lea in August 2026, could not hear the narration over children on board and still wrote that she would come back.

Where it stops being worth it: a one-hour sailing from the wrong port on a grey day in late October. The islands need light, and the shoulder weeks trade crowds for cloud.

Who Needs a Passport, and Who Does Not

You need a valid passport or a NEXUS card for any cruise that stops at Boldt Castle: the five-hour from Gananoque, and the four, five and six-hour sailings from Rockport. City Cruises words it as bluntly as an operator ever does in a booking listing: there are no exceptions. Passengers are subject to US Customs and Border Protection on arrival.

If you hold neither Canadian nor US citizenship, you also need a visitor visa or an approved ESTA before you board. Sorting that at the dock is not possible, and the fare is not refunded for a passenger turned back.

Every other cruise on this page stays in Canadian water or turns around before the international line. Kingston's entire fleet qualifies. So do the Ivy Lea one and two-hour sailings, the Brockville catamaran, the Gananoque one and three-hour, and Rockport's one, two and three-hour cruises. If your group's documents are uneven, those are the sailings that work.

What Is Actually on Heart Island

George C. Boldt, who ran the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, bought the island in 1900 and set 300 workers on a six-storey Rhineland castle for his wife Louise. When she died in January 1904 he sent a telegram ordering everything to stop. The building stood open to weather and vandals for 73 years until the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took it on in 1977.

What you walk through now is a half-restored house: finished ballroom and bedrooms on some floors, bare brick and exposed joists on others, which is more interesting than a polished restoration would have been. The Alster Tower, the stone Power House and the Italian gardens sit on the same island.

The Yacht House is a separate building on Wellesley Island, reached by shuttle, and holds the Boldt family's steam yachts under a 20 m ceiling. Only Rockport's five and six-hour sailings include it, which is the main argument for the longer ticket.

Singer Castle, the One Most People Miss

Singer Castle sits on Dark Island, 20 km downriver, built in 1905 for Frederick Bourne of the Singer Sewing Machine company. It has secret passages inside the walls, a working dungeon and far fewer visitors than Heart Island.

Only Rockport Cruises lands there from the Canadian side, on a six-hour two-castle sailing at CAD $154 that runs on select dates and includes admission to both castles and a picnic lunch aboard. Every other Canadian boat that mentions Singer Castle passes it at distance.

From the water it is visible on the two-hour Ivy Lea cruise, Rockport's three-hour Two Castle sailing and Gananoque's longer options. If seeing it is enough, those are cheaper by a wide margin.

When the Boats Run, and When to Go

The season runs daily from April to October. Nothing sails in winter; the river ices in and the docks come out.

July and August give you 26 to 27°C days and the full schedule, including the sailings that only run in peak weeks. They also give you the queues, and the castle stopover boats fill days ahead on weekends. June and September are the better trade: 21 to 24°C, most departures still running, and room on the rail.

Late September into early October brings the maples out along both shores and is the single best fortnight for photographs. The catch is that day highs drop to 14°C and the wind on an open upper deck feels colder than the forecast. April and May sail on a thin schedule at 11 to 18°C, which suits anyone who wants the river quiet.

What to Bring

• A layer more than the forecast suggests. The upper decks are open and the river runs cold under them even in July
• A passport or NEXUS card for anyone on a Boldt Castle stopover, plus a visa or ESTA if you are not Canadian or American
• Cash for the bar and snack counters. Outside food and drink is banned on the City Cruises boats and searched for at Ivy Lea
• Sunglasses. Glare off the water on the open deck is worse than the temperature
• Your booking voucher exchanged for a paper ticket before boarding at Kingston and Brockville, which the listings ask you to do 30 minutes ahead
• Nothing for the pets, which no operator on this page allows except assistance dogs

Children, Access and the Things That Go Wrong

Every operator here prices children separately, usually 2 to 12, and Rockport charges CAD $5 for infants under two. There are no age limits on the Kingston sightseeing route. The dining cruises need a guest able to climb ten stairs to the second deck.

All the main vessels are accessible on the first deck. The Island Queen's gangway is 88 cm wide and its washroom stalls are too narrow for some wheelchairs, which the operator states rather than hides. Rockport keeps guests with mobility issues on the main level without being asked, which is what Jeffrey wrote about his August 2026 sailing.

The complaints that recur across all nine listings are the same three: queues at the dock before boarding, commentary drowned out by other passengers in the enclosed cabins, and parking. Arriving 30 minutes early solves the first, sitting outside solves the second, and the free lots at Ivy Lea and Rockport solve the third.

Getting There, and What Else Is Nearby

Kingston sits about 2.5 hours from Toronto and Ottawa and 3 hours from Montreal on Highway 401, and roughly 415 km from Niagara Falls, which is close to four hours' driving. Gananoque, Ivy Lea, Rockport and Brockville all sit within 4 km of the 401 between exits 645 and 696.

Between the ports, the 1000 Islands Parkway runs 37 km along the shore as a slower alternative to the highway, with a paved bike path beside it the whole way. The 1000 Islands Tower near Ivy Lea gives a 130 m view over the channel you have just sailed.
